Winter Hair Help
The wind is howling. Snow is falling. Inside, the heat is on full blast. Winter is known for its wicked weather, but it’s also famous for causing wicked hair woes! We’re talking flyaways, parched locks and breakage. (And don’t even get us started on “hat hair.”) Sometimes it looks like our strands have been through a storm!
Need some winter hair help? Have no fear. We’ve got your head covered on everything from static to style.
Celebrity stylists Federico Calce and Francky L’Official know a thing or two about what it takes to tame tresses and keep your mane moisturized. Take a look at their list of tips and turn that dull hairdo into something dazzling!
TO TAME FLYAWAYS AND STATIC:
Francky: Hair becomes more dry in the winter, so flyways and staticky strands can always be an issue. To combat them, Francky suggests using a light hairspray, a leave-in conditioner or serum before walking out the door.

Federico: Federico says you can also use a drop of conditioner. Be sure to use just a drop…or your hair will be greasy!
The Celebutante Sisters: Here’s another easy way to stop static: Run a dryer sheet over your locks! It’s also great for getting rid of static in your clothes. Keep one in your bag for emergencies.
TO PREVENT BREAKAGE/MOISTURIZE:
Francky: To prevent brittle hair and breakage, Francky recommends applying a serum down the length of the hair and at the ends as a seal of protection. For an added boost of hydration, Francky suggests a deep conditioning treatment once a week. Looking for an easy DIY recipe? Here are two from the stylist himself:
Coconut Oil:
Coconut oil has been a popular oil treatment for thousands of years. It keeps hair strong and vitalized against the signs of aging. Apply coconut oil to hair and allow it to work overnight for best results. (Hint: Cover hair with saran wrap if you’re worried about your sheets). Rinse out in your morning shower.

Eggs:
Get your hair super shiny and conditioned with eggs! Take two beaten egg yolks and massage into hair. Start at the scalp and work in small sections. Then, gather all of the hair in a shower cap, wrap in a warm towel and wait 30 minutes. Rinse with cool water and shampoo as usual.

Additional tips? Never use rubber bands to tie back hair. Francky says it is also important that women do not go outside with wet hair when the temperature drops.
Federico: Keep hair quenched. Stop squeezing every last drop of conditioner out of your hair. You know how great your hair feels after being washed at the salon? That’s how it should feel every time you step out of the shower. If it’s dry and stringy to the touch, you’ve washed the conditioner right out of it. Federico says this is a common mane mistake.
PREVENT HAT HAIR:
Federico: Here’s how to keep it at bay. Federico says, when you remove your topper, flip hair over and massage your scalp with your fingers as if you are shampooing. Then, stand up, flip your hair back and fix loose strands with your fingers. Carry a small container of hairspray in your purse and spritz away to keep tresses in place.
STYLE:
Francky: Hair requires more maintenance during the Winter. For a glamorous Winter style, Francky suggests drying your hair, then adding large rollers to give it movement. He also recommends staying away from tools that get “too hot.” (Like a hair straightener or curling iron.) Francky says the contrast of heat with the cold temperatures outside can cause damage to your hair.
Federico: The celebrity stylist says that long hair with layers, or short/medium length hair with soft waves will have you looking glam this Winter. Hair should have body and movement. One woman that Federico says has it right? Hillary Clinton!

Hi. We’re the Celebutante Sisters. And we’re addicted to Diet Coke.
No doubt about it. We need to drink more water. We just wish it didn’t taste so blah! So, we took a Hint…

Skinny pants to wide leg styles. Tailored blazers to flowy gowns. Thê Anh’s glamorous, glossy fabrics and fine attention to detail will bring out your flirty, feminine side.
What is his design philosophy? What inspires him? Check out our exclusive interview with fashion designer Andy Thê Anh. You’ll also find pictures from his Spring collection.

Why did you decide to create your own line of clothing?
I wanted to share my vision of the fashion world and style with as many people as possible.
How would you describe your line to our readers? Also, what is your design philosophy?
I design trendy and ultra-feminine styles for the modern career woman. My collections exude refinement and glamour. I want to present them impeccable suits, imaginative blouses and stunning dresses. As for the clientele profile, the Andy Thê Anh Collection is geared to a sophisticated, modern and professional woman who loves fashion with an edge. She pays attention to detail, knows her fabrics, recognizes quality, and mostly appreciates well fitted garments

What inspires you?
Many things: travels, books, art, artists. In term of celebrities, I always loved the Hollywood Femme-Fatale from the 40’s. For me, today, Cate Blanchett and Tilda Swinton represented this woman in Hollywood.
What is one of your favorite pieces from your latest collection?
I really like the black tuxedo, winter coats and the evening dresses with the big glass beads.
If you could collaborate with any designer, who would you choose and why?
Tom Ford. I admire his business sense and his aesthetics.

Where do you see yourself in five years?
To have a more global brand and increase in our distribution in different parts of the world.
Many of our readers are on the hunt for the perfect “holiday party” outfit. Any tips?
Black tuxedo is the ultimate Christmas outfit.

Picture Perfect Smoky Eyes
Ready to hit the holiday party scene? When we think of getting decked out to deck the halls, we think of glitz! We think of glamour! All with a flawless face to match.
Celebrity makeup artist Christopher Drummond says, “This season, the dresses are slender and simple with an occasional train and details to dazzle. To compliment your fabulous dress, makeup is flirty and smoky.” Yes, ladies, the smoky eye is back on the scene.

Celebrity Makeup Artist Christopher Drummond
One thing’s for sure…we need some serious smoky eye practice. Christopher Drummond to the rescue! The beauty expert, who has glammed up stars like Jennifer Lopez and Brooke Shields, has passed along some tips for achieving peeper perfection. Check it out!
1. Start with a beige shadow base all over the entire lid.
2. Take a gold shadow and apply it 3/4 of the way up, not quite all the way up to the brow. Leave some space between where you stop and the brow.
3. Apply a blue/grey shadow from the crease (middle) of the eye to the base of the lashes. Be sure to blend it well, back and forth. This helps the product adhere, and stay on longer.
4. On the outer corner of the lid, blend in a purple eye shadow to give some extra “sizzle.” Blend well
5. Finally, use a black liner to line the base of the lashes. Follow with mascara.

To compliment the smoky eyes, Christopher suggests lush lips and radiant cheeks. The new Fall/Winter 2009 Color Collection from Christopher Drummond Beauty (christopherdrummondbeauty.com) has products for all the trends in one collection (plus, it’s all-natural, vegan and organic).
EXCLUSIVE Interview- Celebrity Makeup Artist Susanna Torosian
The tree is up and the lights are strung. Ready to get glam for the holidays? Tis’ the season for celebrating…and shopping! Whether you’re looking for a look that’s party appropriate, wondering how you’re going to fit all that must-have makeup in your suitcase, or looking for the best gift to give, the Celebutante Sisters have got you covered! Check out our interview with celebrity makeup artist Susanna Torosian. She’s glitzed up starlets like Kate Moss, Winona Rider and Milla Jovovich…just to name a few! Now, she’s divulging her secrets to the sisters!
We love shopping for new shadow, blush and gloss around the holidays! What colors are hot right now? What are the celebrities sporting?
I say color, color, color your world, so if you like rich plums, burgundies, and wine colors, you’re in luck this season. Metallics, coppers, silver and golds are also a must for this season. Rich, lush forest green shadows, such as vibrant emerald green, and some with flecks of gold, are really hot, as well.
For all over lid base and highlighting rich creams, shimmering whites and even soft shimmering pinks are the key this season. Rich pigmented oranges (a.k.a the winter’s coral, I call it) and vibrant pinks, not too deep, but more fuchsia, magenta rich in color, is very in for the cheeks this winter.
Tip: You don’t want to apply such a richly pigmented blush to the apple of the cheeks straight out of the gate. What you really want to do, depending upon your skin tone and desired look, is to first lightly blend your translucent powder and desired cheek color on the back of your hand and then apply lightly to your cheeks. That way, you can start off light to see if you like the first application. If you want more color, keep layering slowly until you create the desired depth of color richness to your cheeks.
I absolutely love a plump, moisture rich gloss for the lips. Sheer, color pigmented gloss in wine, fuchsia, orange, copper, burgundies, gold and reds are all fun and the way to go this season. Tip: If the color for your lips is too rich, blend a soft bare, or pink even with gold flecks, to soften the intensity of the color rich glosses for the look on the lips desired.

Many of us are looking to create a glitzy holiday look, without looking too “made” up. Can you give us any tips?
Everyone has their own unique and personal style when it comes to color. But if you really want a flawless, soft natural finish, I always start off with glowing, dewy skin. Tip: Spray a little water or toner on your makeup sponge, squeeze the excess out, and then apply your foundation to a spot on the back of your hand. Dab and apply to the face, neck and ears for an all over evening out of your skin tone. The moist sponge, depending upon how moist it is, will give you the desired coverage and dewy finish one desires.
A lot of our readers will be traveling over the holidays…and won’t be able to bring their entire makeup bag with them. What do you recommend packing? Also, do you recommend buying a travel set of brushes?
When traveling, one always wants to bring everything including the kitchen sink as the old saying goes, but over time, one can part with that just simply by asking, “Okay, I need to cleanse, tone and moisturize right?” Right, so those items are a must. If you’re going to a warm, sunny climate bring along your sunscreen. Tip: A facial moisturizer with added sunscreen leaves more space in the beauty bag. I recommend a foundation powder. It’s a must, and in compact form, so it can always be carried along with you for touch ups and to check things out. Then, try to find a small compact that contains a few eye shadow colors: liner color, which can be used wet or dry, (Tip: Just wet half of the eye liner color, so the other half can be used and applied dry to set your liner and fill in your brows) cheek color, and lip color. You can’t go wrong with this. Throw in a sheer light lip gloss. Tip: Stick in your travel beauty bag a lip pencil to create a more defined lip and more intense color for your evenings. And please don’t forget your mascara. Always go with the blackest of black and a very slim mascara container. Now you have room for your tooth brush and tooth paste.

All you need for brushes is face powder, blush, eye shadow, liner and lip. Tip: The liner brush doubles as your eye brow definer and fill in. When applying shimmery or dark eye shadow, and you do not want any excess on your flawless faces, here’s one tip (and the easiest and best): Take a tissue. Place it on half of your face. Hold it there with the hand along with the eye shadow brush and proceed applying your shadow. It takes some practice. After a night of holiday celebrating, you need a pick me up on all levels. Be sure to take care of puffy eyes and to lift and moisturize.

When did this glam gal decide to go green? What “look” is she loving this season? Check out our EXCLUSIVE interview with celebrity makeup artist Karim Orange.

When did you first realize that you wanted to be a makeup artist?
I think the universe realized that for me. I met another celebrity makeup artist and had the wonderful chance to assist her, and I never looked back.
You are a big proponent of natural cosmetics. When was the “aha” moment that first made you decide to go green?
I went “green” (or “orange”, which is my natural state, haha) back in 2002, when I worked closely with Burt’s Bees and their organization. I realized that I could merge my lifestyle with my art.
Natural cosmetics have come a long way! In your opinion, how are the brands out there today? Will they last from day to night? How are the colors?
I think makeup should not really be based on if they will last from day until night. I think that’s an indicator that whatever ingredients are in the product act almost like paint. (Again, that’s my personal opinion.) I think women should allow a moment in the day to freshen up and do “the girl thing.” We spend so many hours doing everything for everyone else, but we think 10 minutes to apply a fresh face is too much time. I really enjoy colors from lines such as nvey, Gabriel ZuZu and, of course, Bare Escentuals.

What are some of your favorite natural/organic brands right now? What would you recommend to a client?
My favorite brands that I recommend are Bare Escentuals, nvey, ZuZu and Suki.

We love that you help “point women in the right direction” when it comes to finding natural/organic makeup. Can you tell us about that process?
You can read the full process at TheOrganicOrange.com.
OK. But what if you just can’t live without that Dior lipstick…or MAC shadow?
Keep the MAC shadow. Trash anything on your lips that you can’t eat, especially if it has known cancer causing agents.
(Celebutante Sisters Sidenote: Karim once tried a lipstick that left her with angry welts. That experience led her to research many of the ingredients used in cosmetics today, as well as the potential side effects that certain chemicals and additives can potentially have on our health.)
What “look” is in this Fall and how can our readers easily achieve it?
This fall we are seeing the revamping of neutral colors, but with a bit of shimmer. For eyes, we like Orgasm blush by Nars as a highlight on cheeks and across eye lids. (Yes, in this economy we like products that can “multi-task.”)

Bronzy is still on for Fall. We love Givenchy all over face powder in Sunny. For a more natural, less shimmer look try Cargo Bronzer in Medium-Matte or Benfit Hoola Bronzing Powder.
We also like eye colors in brown, taupe and light grey. Make sure to pop the lid with a little shimmer. We love (it never fails) Dior 5-colour eyeshadow # 705: Beige Massai. (Great for all skin tones and contains browns, taupes, light peach and a neutral beige for lids.) For the very fair try #030: Incognito. For darker skin or a night time, smoky look try #790: Night Dusk (contains rich browns and champagne.) We also love Dior Jazz Club eyeshadow, exclusively for Fall, with all the hot colors.

Want real excitement? Try lipstick in Confession by Urban Decay, or Neglige Pink by Dior. Great drama for most skin tones!
If you want to go “green glam,” try ZuZu shadows in gem, espresso, eternity, Egyptian gold and chameleon, all this season’s most popular shades. Available at Whole Foods. For that leftover summer bronze look, try Luster Bronzer or Sparkle Bronzer by Mineral Fusion, also available at Whole Foods. Try lip shades by nvey Organics. We eat our lipstick, so if nothing else, let’s make this organic.

We just have to ask! Who are some of your favorite celebrities to work with?
I love Mary J. Blige, The Dixie Chicks, Diddy and Suze Orman.

EXCLUSIVE Interview- Mothe Clothing Designer May Kosaka
Like a moth to a flame, the Celebutante Sisters were instantly drawn to clothing label Mothe.
The collections are like modern works of art, with sleek, clean lines, blocks of color and fine fabrics. Each piece has a chic detail that sets it apart from the crowd: a skin baring cutout, old-school piping, a thick, glam belt, a ruffle. Simple, yet sophisticated, Mothe clothing can easily take you from the office to the party scene.

Mothe founder May Kosaka draws from her studies in computer science and fashion when designing her line of dresses, tunics, tops and more. What else inspires this Big Apple based gal? What is her latest collection all about? Check out our EXCLUSIVE interview with talented designer May Kosaka.

Why did you decide to create your own line of womenswear?
When I started MOTHE, I felt there was a real void in fashion in New York, and generally in the US. I felt like I had a strong voice & vision that I wanted to get out there. Initially, getting a degree in computer science allowed me to explore the practical & logical part of my mind. Sculpture, specifically fabric sculpture, was something I wanted to pursue to bring what I thought was a powerful voice & vision to realization.
What is the philosophy behind Mothe?
To create flattering clothing that’s interesting to look at, like pieces of art, but comfy & cozy enough to be wearable every day.

A ruffle here. A cutout there. Your attention to detail is amazing. Still, you can wear these styles just about anywhere and dress them up or down. They are so multi-purpose! Was that one of the goals in creating this line?
Yes. I’m a working girl, too. I go to meetings. I have to run around the Garment District as part of my work. I need warm layers for winter and light ones for summer. I need clothes for down-time as well as for parties. City life and modern living in general requires a wardrobe that can go from day to night, from casual to party-life, with just a little clever styling. I like to make clothes that women can actually wear comfortably, and will love wearing.
What is the concept behind the Winter 2009 collection?
The Winter 2009 collection is called Shelter. The idea behind it comes from the deep need for comfort in winter months. I’m a person who needs to pile up the layers when the temperature goes down, and to cuddle with a boyfriend & reconnect with old friends when the somber short days & long nights of winter bring me down. This idea developed further into the idea of the womb, and then an egg, and actually most of the designs were inspired by the shape of a shark egg, or mermaid’s purse, this leathery, curvy, alien-looking pouch with tendrils that you can sometimes see washed up on the shore in the autumn.
What was the inspiration behind the Spring 2010 collection?
The Spring 2010 collection is inspired by the idea of molting, which is when animals such as birds, insects, and reptiles, shed their earthy-colored skins & feathers in the Spring to reveal vibrant & more attractive colors for the purpose of attracting a mate. The story that specifically inspired me was the plight of the cicada, which lives underground for 17 years, sucking off the sap a tree root. Then within a week in late summer, hundreds of them come up for the first time in their lives, latch onto the tree’s bark, and shed their brown exoskeletons overnight, revealing a white body which turns to black by morning, blood-red eyes, and amber-framed wings. They fly around for one summer in order to find a mate, then die shortly after. What a story!
If you could dress any three celebrities in Mothe, who would you pick and why?
Bjork and Karen O from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, because they live completely by instinct, something which I’m still learning to do, and because they do and wear whatever they feel like. I don’t really know any other celebrities. I guess I don’t follow pop culture that closely :-)

What are your hopes for the future?
To build the company slowly, so that I can control the quality of the clothes & evolution of the “look”, and also so that I can build a loyal following. To push myself further to develop my aesthetic with every collection, so that my vision is clearer & the designs are stronger every season.

Check out more Mothe designs (and find out where you can buy them) after the jump!
