OIL-La-La

This season, we’re all about oily hair. OK, before you cringe, we’re talking about layering our locks with Argan Oil! This year, it has popped up in a slew of different beauty products: lotions, shampoos, makeup even hairsprays!

For decades upon decades, Moroccans have slathered it on their skin, hair and nails. The oil has been said to turn back the hands of time, restore skin and even help conditions like acne, eczema and psoriasis. Sounds like a miracle potion to us!

We just had to give this lovely liquid a try. So we loaded up on Josie Maran’s Argan Oil. It comes in a scientific-style drop bottle. The formula is extremely lightweight and its primary use is as a moisturizer. We loved smoothing it over rough patches on our elbows and knees and swirling it across our hands. Even though it’s an oil, it absorbs quickly, leaving skin silky soft as if we used a lotion. We tried to use it on our face, but our skin is super sensitive and we did break out a bit. Still, it promises to heal acne in a snap.

Here’s where we really loved to put the stuff: on our hair! Argan Oil is an amazing treatment for split ends. We are trying to grow out layers (It is taking forever!) and this formula helped blend them in with the rest of our locks. And here’s a beauty secret: You can easily fake a manicure by rubbing some Argan Oil into your hands. You’ll condition cuticles and be left with a glistening shine!

It’s easy to get carried away with this stuff! Plus, Josie Maran Cosmetics embraces the green movement. Her products are pure, gentle, non-toxic and luxurious! This formula is fragrance free and 100% organic. Even the bottle is recyclable. OIL-la-la!

Price: $48 for 50 ml on JosieMaranCosmetics.com. You can also buy a solid moisturizing stick for $22 on JosieMaranCosmetics.com.

A Delicate Situation

How big is the pile of dry cleaning sitting by your hamper? On second thought…how big is your dry cleaning bill? Yes, some threads do need that professional touch. Still, there are always those shirts and skirts that we don’t want to throw in the washing machine, but aren’t quite sure what to do with. Now…we SOAK!

Soak is an eco-friendly solution for delicate clothing. The formula is non-toxic, biodegradable and free of dyes and harsh ingredients. The manufacturer says that it’s so gentle…you can even bathe in it! The company also says that it can be used on everything from lacy lingerie, cashmere and silk to wool and hand knits. We put it to the test!

Washing your fibers with this formula couldn’t be easier. Fill your sink with cool water, your delicates and the Soak solution. Let your clothes “soak” for 15 minutes. Remove the items from the water, wring them out and hang dry. That’s right…no rinsing necessary!

I started out with one of my favorite tank tops, complete with ruffles down the front. As I removed it from the water, any remaining suds on the shirt fizzled away as I squeezed the H20 out. Because I used the Flora scent, my shirt smelled fresh and flowery clean. Once the shirt was dry, it didn’t feel soapy or greasy. Mission accomplished!

Next up, a bra and some undies. Hand washing is tedious and every time you throw bras in the washing machine, you risk ruining them. Soak is the solution! No mess. No problem.

Finally, I soaked a wool sweater. I have to admit…this one was a bit tough. The sweater did not shrink, pill or fade, but wringing out all that water did stretch the sleeves a bit. I had to re-form the sweater as it dried. While Soak did the trick, I think I’ll bring my favorite knits to the dry cleaner. Still, I’ll be stocking up on this no-rinse potion and would definitely recommend it to others. It’s a money (and outfit) saver!

You can find Soak in four scents: Aquae, Citrus, Flora and, for those with a sensitive side, Scentless. And because the planet is important to Soak, even the bottle is recyclable.

Price: $16 per 14 oz. bottle on SoakWash.com. But here’s a way for you to soak up some savings: Now through October 31, 2009, log on to the site and enter code SOAK09 to receive 15% off your order.

Soak Up The Savings- DISCOUNT Code

Every time I open the door to my room, a pile of silk, wool and linen is staring me in the face. I end up wearing these delicates a few times and then they end up by the laundry basket. Dry cleaning can wipe out my wallet and I wouldn’t dare throw these clothes in the wash. My mind is “spinning” thinking of ways to clean up the mess.

That’s why I can’t wait to get my hands on Soak, an eco-friendly solution for delicate clothing. It can be used on everything from lingerie, cashmere and silk to wool and hand knits.

The formula is non-toxic, biodegradable and free of dyes and harsh ingredients. The manufacturer says that it’s so gentle…you could even bathe in it! Worried about color fading? This cleaner promises to keep your whites white and your brights bright with it’s no-rinse, hand wash formula. (Yep. You read it right. The formula is “no rinse.”) Here’s how it works:

1.) Fill sink with: delicate items, Soak, cool water.
2.) Let items “soak” for 15 minutes.
3.) Remove items from water, squeeze and hang to dry – no rinsing is necessary! After you squeeze the water out, the remaining suds will dissipate, leaving you with NO residue – just a clean, fresh scent!

You can find Soak in four scents: Aquae, Citrus, Flora and, for those with a sensitive side, Scentless. And because the planet is important to Soak, even the bottle is recyclable.

As soon as we wash up, we’ll be posting a review. Do you want to freshen up your fibers? Here’s a way for you to soak up some savings: Now through October 31, 2009, log on to SoakWash.com and enter code SOAK09 to receive 15% off your order.

Celebutante Sisters Tip: Don’t hand wash? Soak is a great option to be used in the machine’s delicate cycle (even in High Efficiency Machines), and can be used as a handy spot cleaner as well.

Eco-Fabulous Fashion

Eco-friendly fashion doesn’t have to mean unaffordable bamboo frocks or plain Jane organic tees. Save the planet in style with Jonäno eco chic collections.

Scandinavian modern designer Bonnie Siefers makes designer organic fashion look fabulous with her line of dresses, tunics, tops, pants and skirts. Inspired by nature, her goal is to better the world through green and fair trade practices.

From the cutting-edge organic fabrics to the recycled tissue paper and reusable zip packaging used for shipping, Jonäno thinks “green” and strives to be 100% sustainable.

Signature collections include eColorgrown organic cotton, ecoKashmere organic bamboo and coming this Fall, Begonia Silk and Energy Satin Collections. How eco-chic! Check out our interview with Designer Bonnie Siefers. Then, log on to Jonano.com to check out what’s in stock.

What does Jonäno mean?

At Jonäno we feel strongly that the Sami tradition of living a symbiotic relationship with the world is essential to maintaining a healthy lifestyle. It’s the content of the heart that defines the Sami philosophy of life. The Jonäno name is derived from the ancient Sami language and translates as “live well.”

The Sami are the indigenous people of Scandinavia, with roots stretching back thousands of years, to the first people who settled along the Northern Arctic. For thousands of years the Sami People have been using the land in harmony with nature.

What made you decide to launch a clothing/accessory/footwear line?

A personal passion to make an impact that speaks to my values and ethics is the driving force behind our company. I began the Sami Designs brands at a point in my personal life when I took pause to reevaluate what is really important to me in life. True happiness does not come from without but instead from within. As I reflected on what had shaped my values and talents the wonderful inheritance that I have received from my parents stood out. Raised in a family that placed high value in honesty, work, frugality and all things natural/ long-lasting/creative, I developed an enduring belief that clean hard and honest work that also celebrates creative talents can ultimately bring true joy to my daily life and also give longterm satisfaction that life has been a meaningful journey. The concept of Sami Designs evolved out of this personal inner exploration and a company that strives to be innovative and forward thinking in terms of fabrics, style
and business ethics became my personal passion.

What makes Jonano unique?

In a nutshell I think the best adjective that describes the uniqueness
of the Jonäno brand and lifestyle would be mindful. At Jonäno we strive to make thoughtful and ethical choices everyday. For example, Jonäno chooses only organically grown natural fibers to create our trademark eco fabric collections. Jonäno is constantly searching out the cutting edge of new eco fabrics—like our ecoKashmere organic bamboo and eColorgrown organic cotton collections—both awarded the best of the best by Material ConneXions. The elements and materials used in the Jonäno product lines come from crops like bamboo, flax, cotton, coconut, and coming this fall, corn
and peace silk. All of these raw materials are carefully chosen and are certified organically grown, renewable, biodegradable and sustainable. Jonäno’s choice of a green and socially responsible fulfillment center emphasizes our commitment to implementing environmental sustainability and social responsibility along every step of the path. From the material elements that we select to create Jonäno eco chic collections to the recycled tissue paper and reusable zip packaging we protect garments in for shipping, we strive to make mindful choices everyday.

What’s your design inspiration?

As an eco-designer, I’m inspired by a love for the environment, Scandinavian Modern styling and timeless fashion. I worked as an artist, product designer and entrepreneur in Paris, Stockholm and Los Angeles and currently reside with musician, husband and life partner Mark Huggins in native Pittsburgh, PA. Raised up in a family that placed a high value in honesty, work, frugality and all things natural, long-lasting and creative, I credit my Scandinavian Modern styling to the wonderful inheritance of values I received from my family, friends and teachers. My style is sleek and minimalist with a focus on the architecture of the body. I strive to impact the world of fashion with organic clothing creations for the body and soul that are timeless in design, long lasting and those wardrobe favorites you reach for time and time again.

Describe your fashion style.

It has evolved over time, but a common thread, if you’ll pardon the
pun, is the incorporation of handmade and found elements into my
personal style. As far back as I can remember my own mother taught me
to knit and sew free form. By the time I reached adolescence I was
creating my own fashion from sketch illustration to finished piece.
Streamlined design has always inspired me and lain at the heart of my
creativity. Jonäno collections reflect a mélange of Romantic Eco Chic
with Scandinavian streamlined styling that is the Jonäno signature.

Where do you see eco-fashion going?

Eco is not just a buzz word anymore. Eco design is mainstream and growing.

What are your plans for the brand?

Jonäno is involved in the introduction of new sustainable fabric collections, such as Begonia Silk and Energy Satin, and our fall collection, BLOOM, was recognized by Womens Wear Daily in their fall fashion focus. Additionally, Jonäno has been approached by a major celebrity to work on a licensed deal for specialty tee shirts. We believe that the Jonäno brand is well positioned to lead the way in this next generation of ecofashion.

What song never fails to make you happy?

“What a Wonderful World” sung by Louis Armstrong.

Clean Hair...Not Green Hair!

The summer sun means tanning, sand, parties and swimming. It’s all fabulous fun, but it in the end it can cause some serious damage to your locks. Think coarse, dry hair and breakage. And those gorgeous highlights? If you’re not careful, they’ll fade faster than you can say “suntan”. Chlorine can even cause your hair to turn a mean shade of green. According to Don Bewley, founder of eco-friendly hair company Eufora International, these are the top 3 culprits when it comes to summer hair damage:

Issue #1 – Sun Damage:

“Think about a fabric exposed to the sun: it fades and so will hair color,” said Bewley. The more time you spend outside, the more the sun’s UVA and UVB rays will fade your hair color, especially during the summer. Photochemical degradation of hair is the result of light radiation attacking hair proteins, the cell membrane and hair pigments. Essentially, amino acids in the cuticle are damaged creating dry, brittle hair with many flyaways.

Issue #2 – Ocean Water/Air Exposure:

Moisture-depleting sea air and water can really do a number on hair, especially when combined with sunlight. Oxidation occurs when hair is exposed to water, air or sun and even moderate exposure can fade color. To define oxidation, it is anything (i.e. water, air or sun) that adds oxygen to what it contacts. Free radicals are byproducts of oxidation that can interfere with normal cell function and seriously damage cells.

Issue #3 – Chlorine:

Chlorine is used to kill bacteria in drinking water and pools, but keep in mind it is also used in bleach to remove pigment in color. Not only does chlorine discolor hair, it damages proteins in the cuticle.

Thankfully, with a few adjustments to a hair care routine, summer hair damage can be minimized. How do you protect your strands and keep them moisturized? Follow these tips from Bewley:

Recommendation #1: Use Protection

Hair products that provide sun protection from UVA and UVB rays should be used year-round, but during the summer it is the most critical. Multiple products offering sun protection can be layered for increased protection including leave-in conditioners, styling and finishing products.

Recommendation #2: Detox

Use a quality, nondrying chelating shampoo, often referred to as a clarifying shampoo, at least once per week and more often for avid swimmers. Chelating shampoos will remove mineral buildup and environmental pollutants. They also help prevent green hair. Choose an EDTA and sulfate-free shampoo to ensure hair is not stripped of it’s health and hair color.

Recommendation #3: Moisturizing Treatments

A moisturizing treatment or mask is crucial in keeping hair nourished and looking great. Choose a protein and nutrient rich product and don’t skimp on the time. Leave it on for at least 15 minutes to ensure proper penetration of the hair shaft. Here’s a tip…apply the treatment and leave it on while lounging by the pool.

Recommendation #4: Antioxidants

One more important summer survival must: choose products containing effective antioxidants the same way we choose foods rich with antioxidants like Vitamins A, C, E, selenium and zinc. Antioxidants work to neutralize free radicals before damage can be done to hair.

A Green Summer Soiree

Need some help “greening” your next summer soiree? Here are some fab tips from our friends at Celebrate Green!

Eco-Tips For Summer Celebrations

  • The group that crafts together has loads of fun. At your next gathering, ask all your guests to bring a box of stuff they’d normally throw away. You supply hammers, nails, glue etc. Set everything out on a table and have everyone craft their own wind chime or garden sign.
  • Choose local, organic foods whenever possible. Turn a visit to an organic farm into a party. Don’t be shy about asking the farmer for ideas and recipes.
  • Focus on no-cost fun including old-fashioned games and activities like an obstacle course or relay races that you adapt according to participants’ ages.

  • This sustainably made tray will have guests giggling.

  • If you want to give your guests a neat gift, check out the family pack of To Go Ware utensils. They can carry their own bamboo set wherever they go, saving party hosts the hassle of finding extra tableware.

Let Your Hair Down At The Hair Loft

Here’s an idea. Why not add some green to your hair routine? You don’t need to ditch your gorgeous highlights or put weird herbal mixtures on your face to be planet friendly! All it takes is a few simple tweaks. An organic shampoo here. Recycling a bottle of conditioner there.

Need some advice? Clay Patane is a celebrity colorist/stylist and owner of The Loft Hair Lounge and Green Spa in Los Angeles. This “green getaway” was designed with the planet in mind…everything from the all-natural products used to the recycling of the leftover hair trimmings. (Wait until you hear what happens to them!)

Want to know his favorite eco-friendly products? How will his latest hair technique help “extend” your budget? Check out our exclusive interview with celebrity colorist/stylist Clay Patane.

Why did you decide to open your fab, planet-friendly hair salon? The Celebutante Sisters love the idea behind it.

The Genesis of our planet-friendly salon is my adopted son Braeden. Along with caring for a child whom is given away by his birthmother comes an urge to help take care of the world that he lives in and will inherit. He was 6 months old when the idea came to open up The Loft Hair Lounge as an all green salon, and Braeden was present for much of the development. Needless to say, I wanted to have a safe clean environment for him to hang out in and the rest fell in place after that. I believed this would be something that would be healthy for my son and would it be healthy for pregnant mothers and health conscious people, too.

Your salon offers organic and natural products from head to toe and even to toenail! What are some of your favorites?

Our 100% vegan line for mani/pedi, Spa-ritual is a favorite. It’s just
comforting to know that fewer harmful chemicals are used.

Our skincare line is from Hungary and is created from all vegetables and fruits. Eminence is all natural and organic and is a superior natural alternative to facial chemicals. My favorite in the Eminence line is the stone-crop products.

Stone-crop is an aloe-like plant that evens skin tone and moisturizes. I use the mist daily and my skin has never been better.

We heard the hair color line you use is yogurt based. Can you tell us about it?

The cherry on top is our yogurt based hair color Yo, by Kemora, that has amazing gray coverage and smells delicious. They took out the ammonia and the color develops on the outside of the hair shaft instead of flaring and damaging the hair to get the color inside. Our mothers-to-be can get their color done within the first trimester now. The funny thing is that our clients continue even after baby because why shouldn’t they. Even if baby has nothing to do with it, health/earth conscious people love the product too.

What happens to all those leftover hair clippings on the floor of The Hair Loft?

They are made into oil spill mats. The idea behind it is if you think of where the oil goes to after an oil spill or pollution it is on the hair, feather and fur of the animals around it. These mats of hair, (as we know hair is made to hold oil, that is its purpose, ) do the dirty work and we have an endless supply of it. Brilliant! We sweep up the hair clippings every day and send them to an organization that weaves the hair clippings into mats which are used to mop up the oil spills.(The organization is Matteroftrust.org)

What’s your favorite “green” spa treatment?

I personally love the chocolate and cherry facial treatment! You want to lick your own face.

Your latest hair innovation is highlighting with extensions. It’s even planet-friendly! How does it work?

Putting in highlights with extensions prevents danage and is much healthier for your hair, too. There are no chemicals used and it can even make the hair fuller! The extensions last 4-6 months and can be reused a second time. Great for pregnant women who don’t want to use chemicals, but still want to look good. They are bonded with a protein polymer that doesn’t break, damage, or pull out your hair. You can get beautiful, light highlights, or even do the same method for adding darker pieces too.

How can it help “extend” someone’s budget?

Extensions “extend” your budget because you’ll have beautiful highlights that don’t fade or change color and last two to three times longer than when using foil for highlights (which can damage the hair.) Less expensive conditioning treatments are needed and your hair is built up instead of torn down. What could be better?

We just have to ask. Can you give our readers a sizzling hot hairstyle to try out this season?

Try the beach wave with UNITE BOING Curling Cream.

The whole line is paraben and sulfate free, which means healthier less itchy scalp and hair. Any cut with layers will work with BOING and you can save on electricity with no blow drying.

Nothing Says Summer Like Red, White and Green

For most Americans, July 4th marks the official start of summer and that means family and friends gathering together enjoying each other at picnics and barbecues. But all this celebrating can take a toll on the Earth (and cost a lot of green as well), so why not consider some alternatives to the ways we’ve traditionally celebrated summer. Here are just a few ideas:

Serve filtered tap water

It’s so easy to hit one of the big box stores and pick up cartons of water if you’re hosting a picnic or barbecue, but you can save money and the planet when you choose to drink and serve filtered tap water instead. Knowing that bottled water (even by the case), is 240 to 10,000 times more expensive than tap water and that 40% of bottled water should be labeled tap water because that’s what it is, you may decide that the “convenience” is simply not worth the cost. Instead, set out pitchers of iced tap water (print out this tongue-in-cheek label if you like). Ask a willing helper to keep the pitchers full.

Substitute reusables for disposables when possible

Picnics and barbecues have become synonymous with throw aways—plates, cups, napkins, tablecloths and decor. While there are more choices for disposables made from recycled and biodegradable materials, using what you already own and remains a more earth-friendly (and budget-conscious) choice. If you don’t own enough plates and glasses, why not:

• Borrow. Friends and neighbors are usually happy to contribute

• Ask everyone to bring their own place settings. That’s what people used to do B.P.P. (before paper plates).

• Hit your local thrift store. You’ll likely be able to pick up dozens of plates very inexpensively and when you’re done, you can donate them back.

When it comes to napkins, tablecloths and decor, think outside the paper box by decorating with items you already own, like sheets. Supply guests with red, white and blue fabric markers and set them loose. You’ll end up with a unique tablecovering that you can use over and over again. Washcloths make great napkins and if they’re stained with barbecue sauce, use them for rags.

No need to buy paper or plastic decor items when you scour your home (and ask your guests to if you like), for objects in your preferred color scheme and integrate them into the decor. If you’ve got scrap paper your colors, wrap it around empty cans and fill them with flowers (cans pictured, while made for the 4th, could be used all summer). Tie napkins with bits of ribbon and stick a flower, feather or leaves under the bow. If you’re in crafting mode, make banners from old pairs of blue jeans, or flatware caddies from towels like the one pictured (make extras for guests who might want to take these home—sans your silverware!—so they’ll always have their flatware at the ready).

Pinwheels are fun, easy-to-make and decorative and here are instructions for making the recycled Christmas bulb candleholder shown below.

Clean up

You’re probably shaking your head, “Well, of course we’ll clean up, duh!” If you’re partying at your home, this is no doubt true, but be sure to provide bins for trash and recyclables as well as for items that can be composted, assuming these services are available in your community. Place signs on each container indicating what should be tossed in which bin and encourage everyone to use them.

And if you’re watching the town parade or or enjoying an outdoor movie at a local park where recycling bins are not provided, why not carry a bag so you can bring your trash home and dispose of it properly. This includes packaging from food items, cans and paper goods. While you’re at it, how about taking a bag to pick up a bit of trash left by thoughtless individuals? After all, not everyone is as conscientious as you!

Cook it green

When it comes to the environment, barbecues of all kinds are problematic. The best way to cook outside in an eco-friendly way? A solar oven. You can purchase one, but to save money, gather a bunch of kids and make your own. Choose from among dozens of configurations using everything from tires to pizza boxes to a windshield shade. Yes, cooking with solar takes more time, but hey, it’s summer! And if you’re only ready for baby steps, start by cooking part of the meal via solar. Pick up some veggies at the local farmer’s market and grill them up. Once you see how easy it is and how yummy and fresh everything tastes, you may wave good bye to charcoal altogether.

Get Plastered

What do Adrian Grenier, Michelle Pfeiffer, Phil Mickelson and Barbara Streisand have in common? They’ve all decorated their walls with American Clay Earth Plasters.

Do you want to get plastered? American Clay Earth Plasters are created from natural, non-toxic clays and minerals. They come in 43 different shades, or you can custom match your color.

And they’re an eco-friendly alternative to things like paint, stucco and cement or acrylic plasters. Here are just a few reasons why:

  • Zero VOC’s
  • No off-gassing / Non-toxic / Non-chemical
  • Inhibits Mold (tested and proven)
  • The manufacturing uses low inherent energy to produce their products. i.e. 250 tons of material costs $45 in electricity
  • No water used in manufacturing, and is shipped dry (saving on energy costs)
  • All packaging is biodegradable, recyclable, reusable in one form or another; American Clay also has a recycling program for the bags

Here’s the fun part. You can totally go the DIY route and have a “plaster party”! Invite friends over and decorate your house in style. If you’re feeling crafty, you can stencil your plaster. Or, add in things like mica, leaves and shells for some added texture. And because AC is non-toxic, even kids can give it a go. A Try It can be purchased American Clay’s site for $36.

This wall finish is award winning, having been featured everywhere from the New York Times and The Wall Street Journal, to HGTV and ABC’s Extreme Makeover Home Edition. To learn more, log on to American Clay.com.
