SPF Tips To Get You Ready For Summer

Women’s Health Magazine shared with Celeb Sisters some important tips for staying safe, healthy and happy this summer. We included some of their most important ones for you to read up on so you can enjoy the sun without sacrificing your health (and good looks, for that matter).

Smart, Sexy SPF Tips

The ozone layer, our natural UV filter, is beginning to repair itself, but that doesn’t mean it’s safe to go out with naked skin. Shield yourself from evil rays by following this easy advice from Women’s Health magazine.

1. Protect from the Inside Out

Sun damage causes free radicals, which all edible antioxidants fight. Some work better at protecting against the sun’s rays. Your best bites are reddish-orange foods that are high in lycopene, such as tomatoes, watermelon, pink grapefruit, apricots, and papayas, and foods and beverages that are rich in flavonoids, such as green tea and dark chocolate. You’ll need at least 10 weeks of daily ingestion to optimize the benefits.

2. Seek Shades

Ultrastylish oversize sunglasses are more than just a fashion statement. They also shield the paper-thin skin around your eyes from dangerous UV damage (5 to 10 percent of all skin cancers appear on the eyelids) as well as the formation of fine lines and crow’s-feet. More important, sun exposure can affect the eye itself (specifically the cornea, lens, and retina), causing cataracts and macular degeneration over time.

3. Sport SPF-WEAR

Bikinis are de rigueur pool- and beachside, but they provide little sun protection. If you’re going to be in the water, take a cue from the world’s sexiest surfer girls and rock a rash guard. The fabric in Letarte rash guards has a UPF (ultraviolet protection factor) of 50-plus, which blocks 98 percent of harmful UV rays.

The truth is, all clothing has a sun protection factor, but it’s not enough to combat summer sun. The lighter the clothing color, the less it shields. A white T-shirt has an SPF of 4 to 6, while a black one has 9 or 10. However all washables can have a UPF of 30: Just add a packet of SunGuard to your laundry during the wash cycle. Pretty cool, huh?

Transition Into Fall With MyFashionPlate.Com

Summer is over, but that doesn’t mean it’s time to store your sizzling seasonal wardrobe. All it takes is a little reinventing! Jessica Mandeville, founder and CEO of MyFashionPlate.com, is here to help! Here are her tips for transitioning your Summer wardrobe into Fall.

Reinventing Summer Pieces For Fall

With Fall upon us, I (like most fashionistas out there) am super excited to update my wardrobe with some of the hottest fall trends, including opaque tights, one-shoulder dresses and of course – boots!

But, although summer may be winding down, there are still plenty of ways to utilize pieces from your warm-weather wardrobe in fabulous fall looks. Below are a few simple ways to save a little green this season yet still look like you went out and purchased a whole new wardrobe:

1.) Keep your summer dresses. Don’t toss them to the back of the closet just because they’re short and lightweight. Throw on a pair of opaque black tights and cute booties – both closet staples this season – and your summer dress is here to stay! Even layering with a long, chunky cardigan, or a tough but sexy leather jacket is a stylish way to transform your summer look into fall fashion. Add a few pieces of dark or black jewelry and you’ll look like you just stepped off the runway.

2.) Open-toed heels need not be cast away in favor of the popular boots and booties that come with fall. Pair your summer heels with tights, a la Sienna Miller, and you’ll look super chic. Don’t worry, you won’t look like the nerd wearing socks with sandals.

3.) Florals do not just disappear when the flowers stop blooming. Pair a pretty, floral top with a pair of dark skinny jeans and boots, and even throw on a warm cardigan and belt to give your outfit more dimension and shape. Layering key fall pieces can give any light, summery fabric a new look. Or if you’re daring, pair a cute floral dress with this fall’s popular over-the-knee boots and look super chic like Jenna Dewan.

4.) Fall doesn’t mean that legs need to stay hidden from sunlight until spring comes around again. Keep summer shorts in your fall wardrobe rotation by coupling a sexy silk tank (hot pink is a must-have color for fall!) with a cute blazer, and keep those legs warm with a pair of cute boots or booties.

5.) If you’re a do-it-yourself kind of girl and skilled with scissors, cutouts are big this season. Use your style intuition to transform a boring black dress or blah top into one of the biggest trends this fall! Just- please -be careful!

All these looks can be created with just a few main must-have fall pieces: boots (booties, over-the-knee and cut-out boots are all over the runways); tights (opaque, floral, lace, leather and fishnet); jackets (leather, blazers and cardigan) and scarves! The My Fashion Plate Design Studio can also help give you some inspiration on how to rework some of your favorite summer pieces into completely new looks for fall.

Stay warm fashion-lovers! We can’t wait to see all the fun looks you come up with this fall!

XOXO,

Jess

Sexy Summer Hair

Chlorine. Sand. Sun. Sweat. Summer can wreak some serious havoc on your tresses. Looking to put a stop to frizz, dry hair, and breakage? The Celebutante Sisters have got you covered!

Nurse your hair back to health with these tips from Sandi Milone of Dieci Lifestyle Spa. The Spa’s stylists have worked with celebrities like Katrina Boden from 30 Rock, Connor Paolo from Gossip Girl and model Christina Mendez, just to name a few. Read on and get back to loving your locks this season.

Tips for Sexy Summer Hair

1.) A strong foundation is the most important element in healthy, sexy hair. Keep your ends clean with regular trims. I recommend 5-7 weeks for shorter styles and 8-10 weeks for longer lengths. Protect your hair and scalp by using products like:

  • Nioxin Scalp Guard Sunblock SPF 20 – $14.69 on Amazon.com

  • Sebastian Halo Mist UV filter (This goes on dry for shine.) – $14.99 on BeautyEcounter.com

2.) Summer sun can make hair thirsty. Rinse off that sun and salt while letting your locks quench thirst with moisturizing, color safe shampoos, conditioners, and hair masks like these:

  • Sebastian Drench Shampoo and Conditioner- $45.40 on Amazon.com

  • Label M Intensive Repair Shampoo and Conditioner- $19.35 for the shampoo and $19.95 for the conditioner on BrightonBeautySupply.com

  • Wella System Professional Hydro Mask- Click here to find the mask at a salon near you.

3.) For defined curls:

  • Twist locks of any length around two fingers to achieve a curl or around three fingers to achieve a wave
  • Preserve a neat look by blow-drying the front fringe area back while wrapping it around a round brush.
  • If using a blow dryer, keep it on low to prevent frizz.
  • Twist your hair along the front hairline or down from the part and secure it with a bobby pin to give it a flirty vibe.
  • Bobby pins can be your best friend – very useful for tucking away shorter hair.

4.) Accessorize your summer!

  • Place a slim circular headband right over your style for a flowing hip look.
  • Pair a messy ponytail or chignon that has height in the crown and a pair of great earrings.
  • Stock up on head scarves. Fold the scarf at opposite corners, the into a headband shape. Wrap the scarf around your head and tie it, having the bow or knot be placed where it best suits you.
  • Let’s not forget that a straight or sweeping fringe is the perfect touch for those big and fabulous sunglasses we all have.

A Green Summer Soiree

Need some help “greening” your next summer soiree? Here are some fab tips from our friends at Celebrate Green!

Eco-Tips For Summer Celebrations

  • The group that crafts together has loads of fun. At your next gathering, ask all your guests to bring a box of stuff they’d normally throw away. You supply hammers, nails, glue etc. Set everything out on a table and have everyone craft their own wind chime or garden sign.
  • Choose local, organic foods whenever possible. Turn a visit to an organic farm into a party. Don’t be shy about asking the farmer for ideas and recipes.
  • Focus on no-cost fun including old-fashioned games and activities like an obstacle course or relay races that you adapt according to participants’ ages.

  • This sustainably made tray will have guests giggling.

  • If you want to give your guests a neat gift, check out the family pack of To Go Ware utensils. They can carry their own bamboo set wherever they go, saving party hosts the hassle of finding extra tableware.

Shopping for Shades 101

A pair of fabulous summer sunglasses is a staple, but searching through all of the styles out there is enough to give you a fashion meltdown. Should you shop for sunglasses based on the shape of your face? What types of lenses are available? And what do you really need to look for in the perfect pair? For answers to these questions and more, we went to Foster Grant, a leading designer and marketer of non-prescription reading glasses and sunglasses. Let their cool tips be your guide to some hot new shades.

Foster Grant’s “Sunglasses 101” for Summer

Should you choose sunglasses according to your face shape? What styles look best on different face shapes?

Knowing which shapes fit your face will lead you in the right direction in picking out the perfect pair. The sunglasses should help to create contrast with the shape of your face, so people with round faces should choose square or rectangle shaped sunglasses. Square faces look good with oval or round frames, while aviators, rimless styles, and flat top styles are good fits for heart shaped faces. If you have an oval face, anything goes. However, you shouldn’t feel limited to these styles; the best way to pick the perfect pair is to try on as many as possible until you find the one that makes you feel fabulous!

What are the trends for sunglasses this summer?

We’re seeing a lot of two-tone colorations, with an emphasis on dark to light fades. Pastels and translucent colors are creating ultra feminine looks, while bright colors (red, pink, blue) make a bold statement. Cat eyes are making a big comeback, while aviators and wayfarer shapes continue to be popular.

When you’re shopping for sunglasses, what factors should be considered?

Comfort and fit are key when selecting sunglasses. The temple tips should rest against your head, behind your ears, but should not press too tightly. The glasses should sit on your nose bridge, high enough so your cheeks do not touch the bottom of the frame. All sunglasses should offer UVA/UVB protection, but check the tag or lens label to be sure. All our brands are 100% UVA/UVB protective.

Are there any regulations imposed by the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) that require sunglasses to have UV protection?

The AAO recommends that all non-prescription sunglasses block 99% -100% of UVA and UVB light. All of our sunglasses at FGX International meet this standard.

What are the different types of lenses out there? What’s best?

The most common lens types are Acrylic (AC), Polycarbonate (PC) and Polarized. Acrylic lenses are used primarily on fashion styles and are scratch resistant. Polycarbonate lenses are shatter/impact resistant and are commonly used on sport/performance styles. Polarized lenses reduce glare and are great for water activities (fishing, boating, etc). A lot of consumers seem to prefer polarized lenses; however, the best type of lens is determined by the needs of the customer.

Does lens tint matter?

Lens tints have a variety of uses, from creating fashion statements to improving contrast on the ski slope. Gray/smoke colors are the most popular, as they transmit all colors evenly. Green tints also transmit colors evenly, and are becoming more popular in the fashion categories. Amber, yellow, and orange tints improve contrast and reduce glare and are preferred by hunters, fishermen, and snow sport enthusiasts. Brown tints are often used on fashion styles, but are also good for golfers, as they help highlight the different contrasts in green colors.

What makes sunglasses sturdy?

We use high-grade plastics and metals on all of our styles, and build fabulous fit and quality into each pair. Overall, fit and build should produce a “sturdy” pair of sunglasses.

These tips were provided by Karen Goldman, Design Director for Foster Grant and Quantum Optics Sunglasses, brands under the FGX International umbrella.

Get Glowing: Tips From A Celebrity Makeup Artist

Last week, the Celebutante Sisters introduced you to the fabulous Celebrity Makeup Artist and Beauty Expert Vanessa Elese, who introduced us to some of her favorite beauty products. (What? You missed it?! Click here to get the scoop) This week, Vanessa gives us her tips for foolproof summer makeup…everything from glowing skin to bold, bright colors. Ch-ch-check it out:

Summer Makeup is about bold statements and naturally glowing skin. Beyond moisturizing, the number one focus should be sunscreen. One easy one-stop-shop is to find a moisturizing SPF foundation. With this multi-purpose product, you are not only protecting your skin, but also concealing, evening out skin tone and restoring your skin’s balance with continuous moisture. Protect, Prevent and Repair!

Tips For Foundation

The summer flies by, so simplify your regimen and perfect it with the right products.
I recommend Fresh Umbrian Clay FreshFace Foundation with SPF 20 ($42).

It moisturizes, refreshes and refines with Vitamins A,C,E and seawater— both paraben and fragrance free. This is non-comedogenic and organic. With cosmetics today, watch for items that repair and are beneficial to your wear. Otherwise, why wear something if it is not helping you?

Another favorite? Foundation Giorgio Armani Lasting Silk UV Foundation for $58.00. This is a silk UV Foundation that includes an SPF20 with high resistance, 14-hour matte coverage. You will look truly flawless without having too much makeup on. It’s also perfect for oily skin types.

Also, there’s Smashbox’s High Definition Healthy FX Foundation SPF15 for $38.00. It has UVA/UVB protection that is oil free and weightless and provides anti-oxidant fighters like vitamin C. Why not look fabulous while you are treating your skin?!

Tips On How To Wear Bright Colors

Choose one feature to focus the bright color trends of summer.

-Go for lilac/purple eyeshadows with a pale/pink lip or nude gloss.

-Try a melon shade of lipstick or high pigment gloss or stain to achieve a perfect pout this summer.

-Pair these lips with a soft eye during the day or punch up your glamour with a subtle sweep of a soft bronze metallic eyeshadow over the lid. (Try Smashbox’s Brazillian Bronze for $16.00 or Make Up Forever’s Copper 54 for $19.00)

Tips On How To Enhance Your Natural Beauty

-Enhance your natural beauty this summer with flawless skin. Do not “over” powder, but create perfection by blending your favorite moisturizer with your favorite foundation for a customized tinted moisturizer.

-Instead of neutralizing any excess summer shine with additional layers of powder or foundation, try a quick trick and an easy purse popper, with MAC’s Blot Film for $12.50. It’s the single most effective blot paper that doesn’t shred in use and actually, in a quick sweep, can eliminate any unwanted oiliness without the weight of too much makeup. Plus, it is oil-free!

Summer Skin

It’s hot. It’s dry. Does your skin need a pick-me-up? Joanna Vargas is a celebrity skin care guru. Her salon, Joanna Vargas Skin Care, is in Manhattan and is the place to go for one-of-a-kind facials and clear, glowing skin.

In July, the sisters be writing about her signature Triple Crown Facial, an anti-aging and anti-wrinkle facial which combines the best micro-current machine available in the world with the revolutionary healing and skin renewal powers of a hyperbaric oxygen treatment. The micro-current actually stimulates the face muscles like a gym workout – which is why many clients refer to Joanna as their ‘personal skin care trainer.’ How fab!

Now, check out these amazing summer skincare tips from the fab facialist herself!

1. Every morning before you get in the shower, take a coarse bristle brush and firmly dry brush your entire body. Its great for your circulation, but there are some amazing benefits. It stimulates lymphatic drainage, thus smoothing out cellulite. It exfoliates the skin, and it actually firms the skin as well. I tell clients they will see a lifted butt in two weeks of brushing once a day.

2. A winter of dry heat leaves the skin dull and coarse feeling. Once a week, exfoliate with a natural scrub in the shower. I love Eminence Coconut Sugar Scrub as coconut is very hydrating and soothing for the skin.

3. Once in a while, I recommend taking a nice long bath in chamomile tea, fresh lemons and rosemary. Not only is it soothing and cooling to the skin in summer, it gives the hair a radiant glow that makes you look sun-kissed even when you’ve been trapped in the office all summer.

4. For around town and throughout the day, I recommend that clients carry around Ila Face Spray. It contains Himalayan salt crystals which have 102 trace minerals that are essential for healthy skin. The scent is orange blossom – which is refreshing anytime you feel hot, stressed or just tired. In summer heat, you sweat out vital minerals and nutrients and this replenishes your skin when you are on the go.

5. Finally, treat yourself to a great sunless tan. I combine a full body pure oxygen treatment with the tanner application, making it a true therapeutic session for the skin. The oxygen rejuvenates, stimulates cell activity and feels amazing. The client leaves with a full body glow.

Joanna Vargas graduated from the University of Chicago, where she majored in photography and women’s studies. Returning to school for her esthetician’s license, Joanna first worked for a top Manhattan dermatologist and later as a senior esthetician for a spa committed to the “combining technology with nature” concept before opening up Joanna Vargas Skin Care Salon in November 2006. Joanna Vargas Skin Care is dedicated to offering safe and effective ways to improve the condition of people’s skin without resorting to invasive procedures. The spa’s signature service is an anti-aging and anti-wrinkle “Triple Crown Facial,” which combines the best microcurrent machine available in the world with the revolutionary healing and skin renewal powers of a hyperbaric oxygen treatment.
