DIY Face Mask: Healthy and Hydrating!

Looking to whip up something healthy in the kitchen tonight? Try this yummy, coconut oil and oatmeal face mask, courtesy of stylist Josh Rosebrook of L.A.’s The Parlour on 3rd.

Josh Rosebrook’s Coconut Oil and Oatmeal Face Mask

1.) Place three tablespoons of coconut oil into a small bowl.
Coconut oil absorbs quickly into the skin and allows for deep hydration. In addition, coconut oil is a natural, anti-bacterial and anti-fungal, acting as a “guard” against environmental elements. It is also full of anti-oxidants, which fight free radicals to help reduce fine lines and the effects of aging.

2.) Grind up 2 tablespoons of oatmeal. Add to the coconut oil.

3. Throw in a teaspoon of honey.
Raw, preferably, due to it’s high content of vitamins and minerals.

4. Mix together. Apply to clean, dry skin in circular motions to exfoliate.

5. Allow to set for ten minutes. Rinse off with warm water.
Your skin will be smooth, soft and hydrated from all of these natural ingredients!

REVIEW: Josh Rosebrook Active Enzyme Exfoliator

I love a good face mask. (Especially on a weeknight, with some takeout and reality television. Shhh!) So when La La Land based stylist Josh Rosebrook asked if I would like to try his new Active Enzyme Exfoliator, I was at the sink faster than you can say “Real Housewives.”

Josh, who sets up shop at West Hollywood salon The Parlour on 3rd, is launching a new, 100% organic, chemical-free skincare line. Active Enzyme Exfoliator is the first product in his collection to make it’s debut. The promise is simple: Firm, soft, clear skin. No fillers. No fragrances. No ingredients that you can’t pronounce.

The formula itself comes infused with things like vitamins, minerals, botanical extracts, essential oils, and walnut shell particles. (Yes, walnut shell particles! How nutty is that?) Josh says these tiny bits dissolve dead skin cells to reveal fresh, luminous skin. So, exfoliator jar in hand, I headed to the bathroom to give it a try.

The scrub itself itself is brown, thick and gritty. It looks like health food for your skin and smells a fresh, herb garden, which I loved. It felt like I was actually feeding my face when I layered it on. (OK. Sounds cheesy. But that’s how I felt!) I used gentle, circular motions to scrub-a-dub-dub, then I let it set for about 15 minutes. After, I rinsed the concoction off with warm water and gazed into the mirror. My skin seemed to glow. It felt smoother and more hydrated. My tinted moisturizer seemed to glide on more easily. I used Active Enzyme Exfoliator once a week, until I was scraping the last bits out of the sample jar. The redness in my cheeks seemed to even out. The dry spots around my nose were few and far between.

I have to admit, before I gave this product a try, I was a bit nervous. Would the walnut shell particles be too rough on my kisser? I’m happy to report that they felt more like tiny, sand granules! Overall, I’m impressed! This product gets two thumbs up. Find it for $48.00 a container at The Parlour on 3rd, or call (323) 651-4200 to place an order.

Stay tuned. At 3:00 PM we’re posting a special, DIY face mask that Josh Rosebrook created…and passed along to Celebutante Sisters!

2010 Fall Hair Trends

Fall is a season of change. The weather becomes crisp and cool. The leaves on the trees turn to lovely shades of orange and red. Even our wardrobes get a makeover, with sweaters and knee-high boots making a comeback. Why shouldn’t our locks get the same seasonal respect?

Before you head to the hairdresser, make an appointment with GALtime! Celebrity stylist Sacha Quarles, who was also lead stylist on Sex And The City. He gives us the down low on what updo is “in”, which shades will turn heads, and how Carrie Bradshaw would style her mane with her Manolos.

Fall is a great time to change up your hairstyle! What looks were seen on the runways this year…and how can our readers achieve them at home?

Styles seen on the runway are often too avante guarde to translate into everyday styling. This fall season men and women are really stepping up their game and aiming for a more polished look. You’re going to see more beauty. In terms of trends, you’ll see more texture.

For those of us who love to wear our hair pulled back, what updo is “in” for Fall?

There are a couple of styles I foresee being “in” this Fall.

1. High pony tails. This looks great for both straight and textured hair. 2. Messy buns are fabulous as well – if you want to really sound chique, call it a messy chignon. It looks very elegant.

Does Fall mean it’s time to tone down the bright, sun inspired highlights? How do you know which shade is best for you this season?

Absolutely, it is the time to tone down the highlights. I always feel that it’s best to use your own color as a meter for what tones you go for. So using your tone as a base, and either going one or two levels down for lowlights and one or two up for highlights, you’ll be accomplishing great dimension. By keeping your base as one of your main tones, you’ll have a softer grow out period for roots. Personally, I base a lot of my decisions for hair color on the client’s skin tone.

How can we perk up flat hair mid-day? Any tips?

I have another trick for this dilemma! Take a light or working hairspray, flip your head over, hold hairspray 8-10 inches away and spray just a quick sweep over your hair, then toss your hair vigorously.

You can also use a dry shampoo. Spray through your hair and root area, then toss. It will take the oil away and boost the roots. For wavy hair, it will reinvigorate the wave, and for straight hair, it will lift the roots. Be careful with certain texture of curls – you know who you are – pulling your fingers through rather than tossing is a better idea.

You were the lead stylist for “Sex And The City,” so we’re dying to know…What ‘do’ would Carrie go for this season?

When I worked in television, I focused on the character and what’s happening each episode. A lot of decisions were made on the scene or wardrobe, rather than the season of the year. But, I also know Carrie well, so I know that for color, she’d definitely step up for the season that we’re in and throw in some darker tones. She would also go for big texture. It fits her character well and it also looks great on her. Being a professional and fashion icon, she’d go for more of a sophisticated, yet playful look like an undone updo with heavy texture.

Emmy Hair: Recreate The Look

Loose, tousled waves and sophisticated updos turned heads at last night’s Emmy Awards. Want to recreate the looks of some of your favorite leading ladies? Rusk Creative Stylist Sherri Jessee gives Celebutante Sisters the scoop on how to achieve the styled strands of Lea Michele, Kyra Sedgwick and Tina Fey. Try them out with her product recommendations, or use your own lotions and potions.

To recreate Lea’s loose waves:

Use your flat iron to create gentle waves. Begin by applying a heat protectant throughout your hair – try RUSK’s Thermal Shine Spray to eliminate frizz and add shine. Place your hair in the iron while holding it vertically. Twist the iron 180 degrees and slowly run the iron down the hairshaft to the end. The faster you move the iron, the more gentle the wave.

For Kyra’s tousled look:

Start this look of with healthy, shiny hair. Apply a few drops of RUSK’s Deepshine Oil to soaking wet hair as a smoothing product. This will seal down your cuticle, providing shine, while simultaneously protecting your color. Next, distribute an egg-sized amount of volumizing foam throughout damp hair. Tightly twist your hair into a high bun on the top of your head and secure with a holder. Allow your hair to air dry and then release the bun to reveal amazing texture and soft waves!

Get Tina’s sophisticated ponytail:

Create the needed texture and fullness by applying a liberal misting of RUSK’s Thick Body and Texture Amplifier. To achieve the additional fullness Tina has in the crown area, tease the hair softly throughout the top. Lightly smooth your hair back into a low ponytail and secure with an elastic. Take a small section of your hair and wrap it around to cover the elastic and secure with a bobby pin. If you have bangs, like Tina, gently comb them over to the side and spray the entire look with a firm hold hairspray – try RUSK’s W8less Hairspray for long lasting hold.

GIVEAWAY: Anthony Body Essentials

Recently, I received a package in the mail. It was filled with products from Anthony Body Essentials. This line is from the same folks who bring us Anthony Logistics For Men. I quickly set up everything on the table. “Pick what you’d like to try,” I told my husband. “Except this one. This one. Oh, and this one.” O.K., so maybe he didn’t get everything he had his eye on, but what did he expect? That’s what you get when you live with a beauty junkie!

Anthony’s products may say “Men” on the label, but practically all of them work just as well on our side of the sink. Case in point. Anthony’s Energy Shave Cream, from the Body Essentials Line. Forget those metal cans of shaving cream. You know…the ones that sit in your shower, covered in foamy residue. This product comes to you straight in a squeezable tube. No mess. No problem. I put a quarter-sized dollop in my hands, then slathered it on my legs. Immediately, I loved the fact that it stayed put on my skin. It didn’t slide off as I started to shave. The razor just seemed to glide more smoothly. I felt as though I got a closer shave. And after I stepped out of the shower, it was almost as if I didn’t need to use lotion. (The cream’s vitamins and aloe really worked their magic!) My legs were that smooth. Plus, this shaving cream’s “cardamom zest” scent is understated and refreshing. It isn’t too strong and won’t leave you smelling “manly.”

Next up, Spirit Shower Gel, also from the Essentials Line. This has a “green spice” smell that I would call fresh and “woodsy.” One drop on a shower pouf and I was good to go. This gel easily worked into a rich, thick lather. After I showered, my skin felt squeaky clean and moisturized. And get this. The first time I used this product, I was traveling to Atlanta. One cab, one airplane ride, and one thunderstorm later, I was sitting in a friend’s kitchen when I caught a whiff of the shower gel. The scent stuck to my skin all day! How refreshing!

Ready for the GIVEAWAY? THREE (3) lucky readers will win a sampling of products from both the Anthony Logistics For Men Body Essentials and the SPORT for Men lines. SPORT features men’s shaving and grooming essentials, such as pre-shave oil, face scrub and eye cream. Essentials features all-over scented body sprays and shower gels in four scents that refresh, but never overpower.

To enter, simply leave a comment below. One comment per person. Open to residents of the United States only. Tweet the contest to win another entry! This giveaway ends Friday, September 10th. Good luck everybody!

REVIEW: Benefit's Sunday Funday Palette

This Summer, I’m all about beauty that’s “quick and easy.” When the sun is sparkling, burgers are on the grill, and cocktails are being mixed, who wants to waste precious time rummaging through their beauty bag in front of the bathroom mirror?

A palette is the perfect solution when you’re looking to smudge, brush and go. Our new favorite? Benefit’s Sunday Funday collection. It was created by Maggie Ford Danielson, Benefit’s makeup trend artist and the daughter of Jean Ford, one of Benefit’s co-founders. This color coordinated, all-in-one kit comes to you in a very groovy looking box with bright, swirling, “60s” designs.

Open the case…and you’ll find practically everything you need to get gorgeous in five: Hoola bronzing powder, chestnut brown eyeliner, four knockout shadows, Shimmering Rose lip shine, and Benetint, Benefit’s best-selling, rose-tinted lip and cheek stain.

The shadow colors are a mix of classic and trendy. Pink Satin and Light Champagne both work their magic as all-over color. From lid to brow bone, they added a bit of oomph. Use them alone, add two swipes of mascara, and you have the perfect weekend look. To complement, the kit also includes Shimmering Bronze and Pretty In Plum. Layered on the lid, or blended in the crease, these shadows can easily bring your daytime look into night. Add the toasty brown liner and your peepers will really pop.

The Hoola bronzer is universally flattering and adds just a hint of soft, shimmering color. A few dabs of rosy-red Benetint and you’ll have the coveted, “just pinched cheeks” look in seconds. We also loved adding the tint to our lips. It added the perfect amount of red, while still looking effortless. Finally, the pink-hued lip gloss. It’s thick without being overly sticky and provides the finishing touches to your Sunday Funday face. Plus, it comes in a full size tube. When left in the box, you won’t have to worry about shadow dust contaminating it, and you can easily throw it in your bag.

For added convenience, the collection even includes a “Lesson Plan” with step-by-step instructions on how to create a laid back look, how to amp your look up with something more dramatic, and how to apply the cheek tint with ease.

As much as we loved this collection, there were two things that were tough to get a handle on…the mini cosmetics brushes included in the kit. However, that seems par for the course with most palettes these days. We recommend using your own brushes for complete coverage. One thing’s for sure: We’ll be using Sunday Funday every day of the week!

A Guide To Summer Scents

When picking your sexy summer scent, remember- the lighter the better. Rich floral scents used to be the rage when lifestyles were over the top, but now the world is less opulent and so are the fragrances. Here are some tricks to keep it light and sweet, from our friends at Women’s Health Magazine:

Pick a less concentrated form

  • Colognes, body lotions and eau de toilettes contain less perfume oil than headier eau de parfums and parfums making them less intense.

MARK Citrus Bloom Fragrance Mist, $18

Look for discreet notes

  • Green notes (like mint or green tea) and citrus notes (bergamot, lemon or grapefruit) are the most subtle, but make sure that you test it out on your skin first because sometimes these scents can turn unpleasant depending on your specific body chemistry.

Tocca Bianca, $68

Opt for organic

  • Natural scents are a bit lighter- best for those who don’t want a long-lasting scent.
  • Synthetic fragrances molecules on the other hand, are made in labs where chemists can design them to pack a punch and stick around

Korres Pepper/Jasmine/Gaiac Wood/Passion Fruit, $45

Easy does it

  • Fragrance shouldn’t slap those around you in the face
  • To apply, simply mist the crook of one elbow so that the scent wafts about as you move your arms, or spray the skin between your shoulder blades to give those who hug you a faint whiff.
  • A single squirt of perfume is usually plenty.
